If you’re in the market for a new air conditioning system to get you through the summer, but you don’t have any ducts in the walls of your home, a ductless AC system is the right choice. This is partly due to its high efficiency levels and performance ratings. But also, your AC system will double up as a heater!
How It Works
A ductless AC and heating system is actually just like a central heat pump. And a heat pump is essentially a central air conditioner that runs in reverse. Refrigerant moves heat out of the home in the summer in order to cool it, as with any other AC system. But it also moves heat indoors in cooler weather, absorbing heat from the outdoor air—even when it is quite chilly.
The difference is in the way a ductless heat pump is set up and the way it distributes air. Since a technician cannot access a central blower unit, the ductless system consists of indoor blower units that move air directly into the room or zone they are located in.
When It’s the Right Choice
We should mention that ductless AC and heating is not the right choice for every home. If you already have a set of ducts in your home that can effectively cool or heat the entire home (or may be able to do so with a little renovating), then a ductless system is going to be a costly add-on that’s not worth it. You should also know that an additional heater may be necessary for when temperatures approach freezing.
But if you don’t have any ductwork, it can be a great choice for you and your family, for many reasons.
- You want a cooling system that’s more efficient and effective than window and room units.
- You want control over your whole-home comfort system with thermostats throughout the house (and a central thermostat as well).
- You do not want to take on any major renovations to bring air into the home.
