3 Ways to Keep Your Air Conditioner Around for Longer

Are you looking for ways to keep your air conditioner working better for longer? We know how frustrating it can be to have to replace a large appliance before its time would normally run out. Follow these tips to see that your air conditioner lasts as long as possible.

Keep the System Clean

Cleaning or changing the air filter is an important part of maintaining an AC—not just for your air quality, but for the efficiency and performance of your air conditioner. When you change the filter once a month, you’re making sure that air can move through the system with ease.

In addition, you should keep the outside coil clean. When the coil is clean, heat can release into the air around the unit, so that it can effectively do its job and so that the parts don’t wear down too quickly. A technician can clean your outside condenser coil during an annual maintenance visit.

Raise the Temperature

If you’re one of those people who set the temperature very low as soon as they come home from work, you might need to change your habits. Often, people lower the temperature too much when they first arrive, which overworks the system, uses more energy, and makes the home cooler than you need.

Instead, invest in a solid thermostat that allows you to schedule temperature changes ahead of time. A good digital, programmable thermostat helps you to make energy smart choices, and you can have the temperature lower to an ideal, efficient temperature 20 minutes before you arrive home. And using your air conditioner less helps to keep it around for longer!

Schedule Repairs as Needed

Typically, we don’t get called in to repair an air conditioner until it’s blowing hot air into the house or has broken down completely. If you have a chance to call in sooner—if you notice loud noises or a gradually rising temperature—do so.

Calling a technician too late allows time for other parts of the AC unit to wear down and become overworked. It’s always better to catch the problem early, pay less for repairs, have a more efficient system, and help to keep it running smoothly for longer.
