Purchasing new heating or air conditioning equipment can be stressful, but we may be able to offer some relief. If you bought a new heating system (or air conditioner) in 2016, you may qualify for tax credits.
Check with the ENERGY STAR website to find out if you qualify!
Keep in mind that new construction installations do not qualify, and that the equipment must be installed in your primary residence. Most upgrades qualify for a tax credit of 10% of the cost of the equipment (up to $500). Some major upgrades, like solar panels, can qualify for more. In addition, heating and AC equipment must meet certain efficiency requirements in order qualify.
Still Looking for Your New Heating System?
Check with ENERGY STAR before you buy. Guidelines are listed by category. For example, a new furnace must have an AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) equal to or greater than 95. If you only upgrade the fan, it must use less than 2% of the total energy used by the furnace.
In addition, make sure you only allow a qualified technician to install your new equipment. Improper installation can lead to a number of problems within your furnace. It may not be properly sized—which is crucial to the proper installation of the system. That means it cannot operate efficiently, which can disqualify you from warranties, tax credits, and more.
